About the Artist
Bilonda Mireille Rommel—who goes by Mireille—is a Congolese-born visual artist who unapologetically celebrates her vibrant heritage through oil and acrylic paintings rooted in storytelling, cultural memory, and African identity. Born and raised in Kinshasa, she channels the spirit of her people through bold forms, layered symbolism, and expressive color.
Drawing from her Luba heritage as well as Kuba, Kongo, and other Congolese traditions, Rommel employs geometric patterns, vibrant textiles, and ceremonial influences that honor tradition while inviting contemporary reflection. She embraces creative freedom across styles, approaching painting as visual journaling—a way to process, preserve, and share ancestral histories.
Her work builds bridges between cultures, sparking conversations about shared experiences—resilience, common struggles, collective strength, and bold beauty. She celebrates parallel narratives across Black American, Indigenous, Latina, and other diaspora communities.
At its core, Rommel's art connects past and present, self and community, memory and imagination—reminding viewers we are all human, connected by threads stronger than our differences.
