About the Artist
Art by Bilonda Mireille Rommel is a Congolese-born abstract artist based in Seattle, Washington. Her work is recognized for its bold geometric forms, layered symbolism, and unapologetic celebration of her vibrant Congolese heritage. Drawing from the rich visual languages of her Luba, Bantu, and Kongo ancestry, Mireille's art weaves together ceremonial imagery, cultural memory, and African identity into pieces that speak across generations.
Born and raised in Kinshasa, Mireille was shaped by the oral traditions her grandparents and elders passed down, the Congolese music that never left her bones, and the geometric patterns woven into the textiles and sacred objects of her childhood. Largely self-taught, she began developing her style through visual journaling — a way to process emotions, document histories, and express what words simply cannot.
Mireille works primarily in oil and acrylic, exploring themes of ancestry, resilience, and shared humanity. Her paintings often feature recurring elements of ceremonial imagery, bold geometric patterns, and the vibrant colors of her Congolese roots.
At its heart, her work is about connection — honoring those who came before, and inviting viewers from all walks of life to find something of themselves in it too. Because we are all human, connected by threads stronger than our differences
